I just watched the Once episodes in the order of Rumple’s timeline. He deteriorates. You can tell that after Belle leaves, he is bitter and creepier to hide his pain. Everything he says about love, loss and death from then on, you just know it’s about his son and Belle.

In episode 6, Rumpel says to Prince James’s brother,
“Oh everyone has a choice dearie. Just make sure it’s the right one.”
Ok so according to the OUaT timeline, “The Shepherd” takes place right after “Skin Deep.” So… one can logically deduce that both Rumpels drinking and aforementioned quote is a direct effect from Belle’s death.
